In John 6:29, Jesus is addressing the Saducees here, not His 12 disciples. That`s because His disciples had believed "in Him whom He sent", already. Meaning, all 12 disciples had believed in Jesus through John the Baptist (John 1:6-7). They had all believed that John the Baptist had laid his hands on Jesus` head to pass all their sins, your sins, my sins, and the sins of the whole world onto Jesus when He baptized Him in the Jordan River (Leviticus 16:21, Matthew 3:15). The disciples believed that Jesus was the Messiah whom God sent to this world to save us from our sins (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:21, 16:16).
But the Saducees had not believed these things. Therefore, when they asked Jesus, in verse 28, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" Jesus told them that they must "believe in Him whom He sent". In other words, Jesus was telling them that they needed to believe that He had been baptized by John the Baptist to take away all their sins which was the will of God the Father (Matthew 3:17, John 1:29).
In the cross reference Scripture 1 John 3:23, the Apostle John is addressing the brethren who believed in the baptism of Jesus. Saying, "This is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment." Only by believing that God sent His Son Jesus to take away all our lifelong sins by being baptized by John the Baptist, is a person thereby able to "love one another." Meaning, only someone who has had their own sins blotted out as white as snow by believing in Jesus` baptism (water) and His death on the Cross (blood), can truly love another person by telling them the Word of Truth of salvation so that others can be saved too. This love is the agape love of God, not the humanistic conditional love which dissolves as soon as one party hurts the other or simply disappoints the other, or love for someone which ends when one dies.
God’s agape love with which He has loved us human beings, is the eternal salvation He has bestowed on us through Him whom He sent, Jesus Christ. And it transcends time and space.
God testifies of His Son whom He sent to save us from our sins, that He came by water and blood (Matthew 1:21, 1John 5:6-11).
The "water" is the baptism Jesus received to accept all our sins onto His own body through the laying on of John the Baptist`s hands in the Jordan River. The "blood", is the life`s blood that Jesus shed on the Cross which atoned for our sins (John 19:30, 34). The "Spirit" is who bears witness to the Truth of the water and the blood in the hearts of the believers, and before God, sealing them as His sinless children. The Holy Spirit is also the free gift God gives to His children, and who dwells in their sinless hearts.
No human being born into this world is capable of keeping any of God’s Holy Laws perfectly, ever. That`s because we are all born with 12 kinds of sins in our hearts (Psalm 51:5, Mark 7:20-23). So how can sinners who can only sin, obey God`s Holy Laws? It is impossible!
The only commandment of God we have been given free-will to choose to obey or choose to disobey, is the commandment to "believe in Him whom He sent"; to believe that Jesus took away all our past, present, and future sins by His water (baptism) and His blood (crucifixion). This is what it means to "be born again of water and the Spirit" as God tells us in John 3:5. And this is the only way we can be able to love others; preaching the gospel of the water and the Spirit to them.
We are saved by faith alone, in Jesus Christ; His water and blood, and Spirit.
So, dear readers, I advise you to give up trying to obey God`s 10 commandments because God gave them to us not to keep, but to show us our sinfulness and inability to obey them. (Romans 3:20, James 2:10). By trying to keep them, we ought to come to the realization of the real purpose of the Law; that we simply can`t keep them because we`re grave sinners who can never keep them and are guilty of breaking them all! As such, we should all be judged and sent to hell according to God’s Law in Romans 6:23.
