Can prayers of repentance wash our sins away? Prayers of repentance can never wash our sins away because redemption can never come through our own works. Sins are not forgiven by our simply begging God for forgiveness every time we sin. To recieve the remission of sin one must first give a true confession of sin. (1John 1:8-9) One must admit to God that they were born in sin, they can therefore only commit sin continuously throughout their lives and are thus destined & deserving of hell for the wages of sin. (Romans 6:23) Upon giving a true confession of sin, one can now greatfully receive the salvation of God which was fulfilled according to the requirements foreshadowed in the Old Testament Sacrificial System. (Isaiah 34:16) “Search from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these shall fail; Not one shall lack her mate". For salvation, an unblemished animal received the "laying on of hands" from the High Priest in order to transfer the peoples sins onto the body of the animal. Then and only then could the sacrifices blood be shed to make atonement for all those sins. (Lev 16:21) This was a statute forever that Jesus Himself fulfilled when He came to this world as the sacrifical Lamb of of God. (John 1:29) Jesus washed away all our sins by recieving His baptism by the high priest John the baptist and then by His shedding of blood He atoned for the sin of the whole world, thus He has already saved everyone from the condemnation of sin & given New life to all who believe. (1 John 5:6-8) As we will continue to sin till death due to the weakness of the flesh, we are saved by faith when we admit our insufficiencies to God and believe that the sin of the world was already washed away over 2000 years ago, when Jesus took them away with His baptism. We can then give thanks to God.
